Reception
More structured learning: exploring the world while learning through play
"Life is a series of experiences, each one of which makes us bigger."

Reception continues to build on the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum, extending skills, knowledge and understanding. We balance constant encouragement with higher expectations in terms of a child's application and achievement. Children work towards and beyond the Early Learning goals, exploring mathematics, reading, writing and other areas of the curriculum.
Reception is hands-on, purposeful and organised to help each child progress. Activities new to the children include one-to-one reading, daily phonics lessons, taking reading books home every Monday, Wednesday and Friday plus keywords and rhymes on the other two days, and simple recording of maths and literacy work. Interactive whiteboards and iPads add to the engaging and immersive learning experience. Children spend half a day every week at Forest School doing a wide range of activities, including den building and fire lighting, exploration and discovery. More importantly, Forest School provides the perfect environment to develop and apply the key characteristics of learning - resilience, risk-taking, initiative, curiosity, originality and empathy. Our Thunk of the Week promotes deeper thinking, as part of our commitment to Philosophy for Children throughout the Pre-Prep and the Prep school.
Busy Bee Time
As in Kindergarten children can free-flow between a carefully planned indoor and outdoor environment that aims to support and scaffold their learning while also offering challenge and new experiences . This hands-on, practical and play-based approach ensures that whilst learning new skills children have fun in an environment in which they feel safe and secure.
What you need to know
Your child attends full-time and wears the school's uniform for the first time: many are excited by this visible progression to 'proper' school. In addition to both classroom and outdoor learning, each class also has a weekly cookery lesson, music with a specialist teacher and PE lessons. In the summer term we also have a weekly swimming lesson. A productive year ends with the children selling all the produce they have grown or made themselves.
Projects
Over the year Reception children are introduced to various projects which support learning of new skills and knowledge. From learning about ourselves and embracing the differences between us, to finding out about the habitats and lives of different animals and learning and retelling some traditional tales. Each project aims to continue to inspire a love of life and learning!
The first project to look forward to in Reception is....
Look At Me Now
Each new project will be published on the Google Classroom throughout the year along with further information about what the children will be learning.
Visits
Unfortunately at the moment we are unable to make any educational visits however we will be making the most of our wonderful grounds and aim to take a daily walk as well as a full morning at Forest School each week.
