Topic Overviews:
Here are our topic overviews for the year. There are so many exciting things that we will be learning together!
Autumn 1: Where Are We Now?
We start Year 2 focussing on where we live. Starting to with the continents, UK and finally Lymington.
We will learn about the local history of Lymington (salt making and smuggling) with lots of trips and visits to the Sea Wall, a talk by a local historian and a trip to St Barbe's. Finally, we learn about the history of Walhampton with a walk to see Burrard's monument and treasure trail around our school.
Autumn 2: Fire, Fire!
After half term, we head back over 350 years to London to find out about the devastating fire which spread across London, from Pudding Lane. We build model houses, focusing on the features of Tudor houses in order to reenact the fire in our own playground! Can we put it out in time?!
Spring 1: Space
Through a trip to Winchester Science museum, DT modelling of our solar system, we ignite our research skills to explore our universe. We find out about the space race, which animals journeyed to the moon, what it would be like to go to space, as well as meeting 'Bob- the Man on the Moon.’
Spring 2: Walking with the Dinosaurs
How long ago were they walking the planet? How big was a tyrannosaurus rex? How did the dinosaurs die out? We hope to answer all these questions with this topic. We even search for evidence of a dinosaur that lived in Walhampton's school grounds!
Summer 1: Circle of Life
Not only do we find out about types of animals and their lifestyles, we also compare habitats with Africa! We write a story based on the tale of 'Anansi' writing an adventure based on an animal found at Walhampton. Who is Anansi going to trick next?!
Summer 2: Healthy Me!
In the summer term, we focus on scientific units starting with keeping healthy. Starting with our diets, where we learn about balanced meals, what each type of food does for our bodies - even making a healthy meal for our lunch, ready to take to the beach! We find out all about our teeth. What happens if we don't brush our teeth? Which drinks contain the most sugar? Finally, making sure we keep fit by designing an exercise routine!
